Our Favourite Visitor to the Garden
Great Spotted Woodpecker
One of our favourite garden visitors has to be the woodpecker — and most days we hear them before we see them. That sharp, laughing kik‑kik‑kik call carries across the garden, and it’s often our first hint that the Great Spotted Woodpecker family is on its way in.
We feel incredibly lucky to have them visiting so regularly.
Below is a photo of the male feeding the juvenile and some feeder trail‑camera footage from our garden, capturing those quiet moments when they drop in to feed and explore.

Key features to look out for
- About the size of a Blackbird, but more slender
- Black, white and red plumage (on belly)
- Males have a red patch on the back of the head
- Juveniles have a red crown
- Bouncy, undulating flight
